Yesterday, I started on a big project. Project Mommy Needs a Carry-on Bag began like this:

There is one skein of dark gray that isn’t in the picture, but you get the idea. After two packets of acid dye (each pack is supposed to dye 1 lb. of protein fiber single strength) and roughly 24 hours, it looked like this:

Now I’m starting to worry that I won’t have enough red to do what I have in mind with this. But I (hopefully) can get some more this weekend.

For more on this, check out this post.

Bonus: Criminal Minds Production Diary – from the book Sunken Treasure, written and read by Wil Wheaton. You can buy the entire book, either as a real live physical book or a .pdf file (which I did); or you can buy this excerpt, done as an audio piece. He adds a lot of asides and annotations to it while he’s reading – it’s really terrific. Plus it’s $5 USD.

Well, not the whole thing, but it’s still great listening.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about Wil Wheaton’s latest book/chapbook being published as a .pdf file, for $5USD. It’s wonderful – I’ve really enjoyed it a lot. Now he’s done an audio version of his production diary from last night’s episode of Criminal Minds as a DRM-free mp3 file, also for $5USD.

Wow.

This is my first experience with Wheaton’s audiobooks. I really enjoy his sadly infrequent Radio Free Burrito podcasts, and this really reminds me of that, in the best possible way. He reads the production diary, but there’s also asides, explanations and tangents along with that. The file’s pretty long, almost 2 hours worth, but definitely worth the time. Really great stuff. You might not want to share it with your little one, though; unless, of course, they’ve gotten to watch the Criminal Minds episode (which I would DEFINITELY not recommend for young kids).

He’s pretty committed to the idea of DRM-free, open source and self publishing formats – something much appreciated here at Chez Evil. Wheaton’s first two Operation Crazy Ideas have been great so far. I really hope this works out for him.

Since this is School Girl’s birthday week, there have been a lot of subjects for posts running through my head. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to get any of them out in a way that a) doesn’t make me burst into tears and run off or b) sound like whiny shite garbage. So, there are a couple of other things from the past week that I can write about (without the dangers of a) or b)).

There’s the Internet protest of the proposed changes to the New Zealand copyright laws. I wrote about it last week, and my site was black for part of yesterday and this morning (early). Apparently, there is some tentative good news: the changes have been postponed and may not happen at all unless the law is made more clear. So, it worked, at least for today.

Last week, Wil Wheaton released a collection of his writings, published by Lulu. I had thought about buying it, but can’t afford things like that due to Birthday Time taking up almost every available penny. Then he tweeted this, and I started screaming. “Ooh, me! I WANT!” So when he put up the URL (which is right over here), I went ahead and bought it.

I couldn’t pass it up for $5USD. And I can read it on the computer when everybody else is asleep. Or, indeed, on anything I want that will display a .pdf file – it’s been published without any DRM. Seeing as how some of us have had issues with sleep for the past two days – guess how I managed to hit “publish” the first time – this has worked out very well. So far I’ve read it 4 times since Saturday night.

Mr. Wheaton is a great, great writer, and Sunken Treasures is a good sampling of his style. My favorites are the ficlets – I think they would make great horror movies – and the pieces when he’s being a dad. Not a “hyphenated Dad”; we know a thing or two here about hyphenated parents and how much that hurts, both us and our daughter’s other family. Just a dad, passing on his love of all things geek to his two sons. Great, great stuff. I’d say it was the best damn $5 you’ll spend today. So, you know, go check it out.

Heavily edited to fix the Posting Fail. *facepalm*
