The Day We Met

Seven years ago today, two people that we’ve come to love and care about had one of the worst days of their lives. We got to meet one of them for the first time not long after – in fact, that afternoon. M and S, our daughter’s other family, had just surrendered their parental rights only a couple of hours before we all met that day. Evil Dad and I hadn’t met S before. He just struck me as so young, even though he was (technically) an adult. We met the people who had been caring for the baby who would soon be our daughter for the previous 6 weeks. They were very sweet, very religious; and not only already adoptive parents, they were fostering their own 3rd child whose finalization was scheduled for that August.

We also got to meet our daughter that day. She was (still is) incredibly beautiful. Very tall. M had insisted on placing her in my arms. It wasn’t hard to see how difficult it was for her – all of a sudden what had happened 2 hours before was real. It was hard for S as well; nobody was certain that he would agree to go to court with M, but he did. We got to see him twice, as it happened; once that day, and then when we were placed two days later.

There was a lot more that happened that day, and in the two days after, but that will wait for another day.
