The President’s Visit

President Barack Obama is coming to Denver this morning to sign the stimulus bill. I found CNN’s speculations as to why he chose Denver…amusing.

Needs to get out of DC? Hey, Chicago’s closer. Wants to focus on Teh Green? Meh. Denver and the surrounding area isn’t all that green, but the new solar installation at the science museum sounds pretty exciting and would definitely be worth a look.

Speaking of science museums…I suspect, but don’t know for sure, that there was another reason why the Denver Museum of Nature and Science was chosen. President Obama values science. Certainly enough to give it more than a passing mention in his inauguration speech, enough to make a Nobel-Prize-winning physicist the head of the Department of Energy. So he picked a place that is symbolic of things he values, like other presidents might have before him.

Hey, if our last president went for a symbolic gesture in Denver, he might have signed a bill in the middle of the 16th Street Mall. Or possibly the Buckhorn Exchange. I’m just sayin’.

Of course, it might also have a little something to do with the role our Democratic governor played in getting him elected – and the fact that he was already here for the convention last August. There are, however, a lot of places in Denver President Obama could have gone to sign the stimulus package. The fact that he chose DMNS says a lot about the things he values. Even though I didn’t vote for him, I couldn’t be happier.
