A Beautiful New Day
I just got done watching the inauguration. Barack Obama is now officially the 44th President of the United States of America. I know it sounds sappy and all – and a little weird coming from someone who didn’t vote for the man – but it feels like the sun has come out after a horrific 8-year storm. Just incredible, and a little overwhelming in its brightness.
What I loved the best about this morning:
- Seeing the Obama kids up there on the platform with the rest of their family. Just lovely.
- Joe Biden being his goofy self. Like him or hate him, he’s a real person.
- Yo-Yo Ma.
- Obama mentioned non-believers! And gave a shout out to science! It’s sad, but it made me cry to hear both of those said out loud. And not as a means of attack, but as a means of inclusion and welcome.
- Just getting to see the Rev. Joseph Lowery. A figure from my US History book come to eloquent life.
It also give me great pleasure to add the official White House blog to ye olde blogroll over there. The White House home page has been changed over already and looks beautiful. Now to go work on something that I’ve been putting off until today – I might post it on Flickr when it’s finished.
From now on, I can actually write the word President without quotation marks, without any sort of snark whatsoever. It feels really good.

I though of you when he mentioned non-believers. What a wonderful way to show how inclusive we should be when it comes to our country and of course you know I teared up at the mention of science as well.
One of my student workers comes from Delaware and they love Joe Biden out there. He’s just one of the neighbors. His dog runs on this guy’s lawn all the time, lol!
I love that! Even though I tense up whenever Biden opens his mouth – you just never now what’ll come out – I do like that he’s a normal guy.
Isn’t it sad when we get all teary and happy whenever science isn’t bashed, or non-believers are even mentioned in our country? Just goes to show how awful the past 8 years really were.
“… and non-believers.” At that moment, Brandy and i gave each other a quiet high-5 here at home.
And gracious, how are we supposed to act, now that the man occupying the White House for the next 4 years is intelligent, cultured, classy, and doesn’t butcher the English language every time he makes a public statement?! *L*
Oh yeah, and the girls were just precious. It’s going to be fun having children in the White House again.
*tight hugs to you, the wee one, and ED*

Happy? Relieved? Unembarrassed to admit to people that yes, you are American? The possibilities seem pretty good…
The “Moment of Zen” on The Daily Show last night was Bush’s last ride in the Giant Green Chopper of Doom. Evil Dad and I both waved and said, “Bye, George. Fsck you!” Mmm…
