New Year’s Eve
Today is New Year’s Eve. It’s the day when a lot of bloggers post about the highlights of their previous year. Don’t look for that here today. 2008 was Teh Suck, especially the last half.
It’s also the day when bloggers post their New Year’s resolutions. I will admit, I’ve got a couple that I’ll bore you with. Not the ones you might expect, though. I’ve pretty much given up on the whole “I will lose weight this year” thing; save getting in shape enough to go out bike riding with School Girl when the weather gets good enough. Which will probably be tomorrow here, by the looks of it…
I’ve decided to let go of some fantasies/ideals about how certain relationships will be in the future. I refuse to elaborate publicly, but I’m sure most of you know where this is going. We will not close our adoption. That’s all I’m prepared to say.
I’ve also decided to get much more serious about working for myself this year. Taking a deep breath and putting out my stuff, both with music teaching and other things, has got to be my second-to-the-top priority this year. It’s very scary to me – believe me, you have no idea how much this frightens me – but it has to be done.
As for tonight…School Girl and I are shopping for New Year’s Eve pizza fixings and New Year’s Day roast beast w/sauerkraut this morning, along with ingredients for Buzzed Aldrins and (possibly) Pangalactic Gargleblasters. For what I’m going on about, go check out Skepchick. They involve two ingredients that I haven’t dealt with in a while, one for far longer than the other. We’ll hopefully be watching some more Godzilla movies this evening; School Girl wants to stay up until 10:30, which will get us to 2009 somewhere between New York and Chicago. Let’s see if Mum and Dad can stay awake that long. Happy early 2009 – or happy 2009, depending on where you are.

Sauerkraut? Yikes.
Hope 2009 is better than 2008.
Yeah – I usually take a “be-polite bite” of sauerkraut. I’m the anomaly in my mom’s German-English-Cree family; everybody else either really likes the roast and sauerkraut tradition, or says they do. Not me. Oh, no…not me.
Hope 2009 is better than 2008.
Me, too. *hugs* Thanks.
happy 2009! big hugs.
Happy 2009! *hugs* Hope it’s a much better year.
Happy imminent 2009, my dear *tight hugs* A certain gal i know and love is not capable of setting goals that she cannot reach.
I, too, am contemplating the preparation of the roast beast and sauerkraut on the morrow… I’ve picked up the local traditions for the most part, leaving behind the ham and collard greens, though i will make a small batch of black-eyed peas just because i like them.
Black-eyed peas are surprisingly hard to find here, unless they come in a can. I think I’ve talked Evil Dad out of the collards, although they turned out pretty well on Thanksgiving.
*big hugs* We’ll see. Happy 2009 to you guys! Love you all.
Do they have to be collards specifically, or will any old greens do? Perhaps a nice braising mix, with kale, chard, spinach, collards, mustard… whatever. It definitely cooks faster (and tastes better) than collards by themselves…
Oh, and some 20-odd years ago (yikes!) the ‘Buzzed Aldrin’ was independently discovered by a group of college freshmen who, in a burst of inspiration born of an odd mixture of boredom and desperation, came up with what they called the NASA Screwdriver; the companion beverage, Rocket Fuel, was your Buzzed Aldrin (TANG powder straight into the vodka, right? No ice because we, I mean *they* had already used it all…).
I’m reasonably certain that this is one of those ‘multiple independent discovery’ sorts of things, like paper, or fire, or pottery. Just far more sordid.
AFAIK, back in NC it was always black-eyed peas and collard greens. I’m not real fond of collards, especially while they’re cooking, but I do love kale. Mom’s family has always done the pork roast and sauerkraut thing, so we do that.
Yes – that’s it. One of today’s posts on Skepchick shows a bottle of the stuff, thoughtfully provided by some gracious person to a Drinking Skepchickally event. TANG powder + vodka = Mmmmm…
I was going to splurge for some good vodka, but I can’t find the brand I wanted here. I think I’ll send for some before our anniversary this year.
I’m reasonably certain that this is one of those ‘multiple independent discovery’ sorts of things, like paper, or fire, or pottery. Just far more sordid.
But just as useful. You know, for the good of humanity. Or something.
Happy New Year!
Here, the rule is that any stewed ‘greens’ count… back home in Charlotte, collards are the only thing that would do.
My own possible, barely acceptable substitution today might be fried cabbage w/thick-cut bacon. Yes, it is COPD on a plate, but it’s one of only two ways i’ll eat cabbage (the other involves a wok and much soy sauce. *L*)
Yep – Evil Dad’s family has some sort of collards for Thanksgiving, Xmas and New Year’s. I’d much, much rather have kale; cooked with pretty much anything, but right now I love it with just olive oil and a ton of garlic.
I have a tough time dealing w/regular green cabbage myself. I can eat red cabbage now, with lots and lots of apples and raisins, and napa cabbage isn’t too nasty – but the green stuff is just awful.
I’m trying to come up with some ideas to start my own business or at least work more for myself. I’m not sure if that’s in crafting, writing or web programming (assuming I pass a class at some point). I just feel a need to take some control over my life. Pretty scary stuff.
I hope this year brings everything you want from it and brings much love and luck.
It’s a hard time to do that, too. But I honestly think it’ll work out for you, particularly if you want to get more into writing.
I hope this year brings everything you want from it and brings much love and luck.
*hugs* I hope that for you and your family, too.
