There were some things that happened at our school’s Food Festival that I couldn’t talk about in an unlocked post; involving the Forbidden Subject, and something only a precious few people would be interested to read about. As for the other stuff…
Our assignment was to bring some sort of dish/dessert that was traditional to our family or traditional to our culture as a way of celebrating the winter holidays. By request, I brought over a batch (actually, a giant batch) of cinnamon rolls. There were quite a few other families who brought food as well; everything from Eid cookies (aw, man, those were so good) to Dresdener Stollen to a plate of 3 kinds of tamales and some yucca fries. Two people even brought baked ziti. Lunch at 10AM = Win!
Part of the whole exercise was having the kids talk about their different holiday traditions, and the foods they brought that symbolized them. I was a little nervous about School Girl actually speaking in front of the class, but she did wonderfully well. Having a wireless mic was absolute genius – it’s also a part of their normal class day; the 1st grade teachers all seem to have them, and they’re great for eliminating the need to scream at the top of one’s lungs to be heard. School Girl talked a little about our making cinnamon rolls on Xmas morning, and took questions from her classmates. She wasn’t the most confident speaker in the class, true, but she did a terrific job. I was incredibly proud.
And that afternoon, we walked everything home…everything being the two empty Tupperware containers and School Girl.
