Last weekend was our almost-annual trip to our local zoo’s Boo at the Zoo fest. It’s normally held the weekend before Halloween every year; last year, we went with School Girl’s other grandparents. This year, we went with some old friends and their three boys, two of whom are 3+-year-old twins.
Our first mistake – yes, it’s perfectly okay if you say that the first mistake was going to begin with – was getting there right before lunchtime. On a normal year, we’re there by the time the zoo opens. That way, we’re finished and out before the worst of the crowds arrive. This year, we were the first of the crowds.
The day pretty much dissolved into the Sweetie Death March; standing in very long lines, walking around in a daze from one candy station to another, which were manned by either bored teenagers, overly enthusiastic salespeople or the SCA, and repeating. For the next couple of hours. Most of the animals had hidden themselves away – hey, at least they knew what was happening. The boys had the best time getting their pictures taken with several members of the Mountain Garrison of Vader’s Fist. Oh, and Boba Fett was there as we were heading out, so we had to stop for him as well.
School Girl’s “boyfriend” was dressed as Anakin Skywalker, and the twins were Spiderman and Superman. Our Pirate Fairy Princess had her first meltdown quite early in the day, when she decided that Pirate Fairy Princesses would not wear long sleeves. Ever. Certainly not when it was sunny and warm outside. Consequently, no pics of the costume just yet. We’ll be trying again on Friday evening.
I think the kids had a good time. I know they were overloaded with candy. I’m hoping we’ll all have more fun on Halloween itself.

At least you didn’t get hit with snow, always a chance out your way.
One of the three bright spots of the whole day!
You know, it just occurred to me – this will be the first time in the 9 years we’ve been here that Halloween (supposedly) will be warm and sunny.
Win!
