I really hope that other states will follow in short order.
I’m pretty hopeful, despite the initiative that’ll be on the CA ballot in November – this is a pretty conservative court, and they made it pretty clear that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation isn’t acceptable under the state constitution. Even if the anti-marriage amendment passes (no sure thing), the language of the ruling provides a lot of ground for the state to stop recognizing religious marriage, period, and redefining all marriages as civil partnerships.

That would be a great thing for a lot of people, and would certainly take down the argument that “well, (insert your religion here) is against same-sex unions, so we won’t marry anybody”. It seems to work well in France.
