Our Weekend: Free Comic Book Day

Saturday was Free Comic Book Day. The last time we went was two years ago. The store was crowded and a little scary (to me – I’m guessing it was a LOT scary for my then-4-year-old), the selection for little ones was dismal, and it kept us from going back until Saturday.

The store had moved in the meantime, to a cleaner and considerably roomier location. Oh, yes, and under different management. Evil Dad agreed to accompany us this year, which made a big difference too.
Plus the little matter of somebody being two years older and, well, more ready for the experience helped.

We had a great time. The store had a sale on indie comics, toys and some of the games, so Evil Dad and I bought a couple of things while we were there. There were a couple of suitable titles to choose from this year. School Girl picked out Tiny Titans, and has read it four times since Saturday afternoon. The manager even offered to help us find other things “the next time you come in.”

So, the old store in a new place now has one enthusiastic customer and two maybe-kinda-sorta customers, at least for the summer. And yeah, we’ll be going to Free Comic Book Day again next year.

Speaking of indie comics – have you seen Hereville? It’s “the best comic about an 11-year old dragon-fighting orthodox Jewish girl you’ll read all day.” No, really – it is :-) Even with The Boy’s low ‘freakout’ threshold, it’s just barely PG.

The author (Ampersand of Alas, a Blog) is out of printed copies now (I managed to get one of the last ones from his first printing), but he’ll have more in stock sometime in June. I’m planning on ordering a few as gifts for some family members.

:D That looks adorable! I’m going to go ahead and bookmark that one – maybe for a slightly late kindie graduation present. Thanks for that!

My pleasure; it’s definitely a fun read. It’s got a couple of scenes in it that could qualify as ‘intense,’ so you might want to preview it first – but School Girl sounds like she’s got a higher tolerance than The Boy in that regard…

Ah. School Girl is kind of funny about stuff like that – things that I would never think would be a problem, we just can’t watch/read/deal with; or usually what happens is – she’ll go very quiet and never ask to see/read the offending thing again. She’s done that with Spiderman, which surprised me at the time.

where did you go? i’m not exactly feeling my new place since highlander quit the scene….

Hey! It’s been a bit insane since School Girl has been a…well, you know. I’m hoping – *hoping* – I can catch up in the summer.

Have you been watching Sarah Jane? I think School Girl is almost old enough to watch. Maybe when she gets out of kindergarten next month.
