We’ve been out shopping for presents this week. Most of the presents are destined for faraway places; in fact, we just sent out a bunch of things today. We’re just getting ready to wrap and mail out a couple of other ones – which leads to this post…
Every year, we ask Big Girl whether or not she’d like to send something to M, her birthmother. Usually we send a card and additional pictures, with the offer of a visit whenever she’d like. This is the first time she’s actually thought about buying her something herself.
We went out to the Big Box Store and looked around for things. Big Girl eventually picked out a pretty vase, cream with red decorations. She also picked out a big feather tree for C & J, M’s parents.* She was really excited about buying something for them; I think she’s starting to get the fact that the holidays are as much about getting things for other people as they are about receiving gifts, which is a very good thing. We’ve already sent them out some cards and pictures – now comes the exciting part. Wrapping and mailing it out.
I think we’ll give C a call and see if we can’t drive it out to them. It’s not very far, and I think they’re almost ready to see her over the holidays. It would be a whole lot easier than trying to wrap the damn thing…
*I should say that we don’t send S and his family (Big Girl’s birthfather) anything at all, save for our annual letter/picture fest at Big Girl’s birthday. S has chosen to close his portion of the adoption, and although we’ve made overtures to S’s mother, we’ve not heard from her either.

It has to be so good for Big Girl to be able to include her first family in her holiday celebrations, even if they may not all be included in person. I love this!!
